In the 1980s, William H. Gates III introduced a groundbreaking operating system known as Windows, widely propagating the use of personal computers (PCs) among the masses. This significant milestone marked the commencement of the global digital economy with the arrival of the 21st century. The exponential advancements in big data, computational science, and integrated circuit technology (IC), along with the rapid progress in micro-nano sensing and optical fiber communication technology, propelled by pioneers like Steve Jobs who revolutionized the creation of intelligent terminals, have interconnected the world through the Internet. The effects of digitization, intelligence, and globalization have facilitated swift and efficient co-creation, integration, and sharing of wealth across human society. This transformation has propelled humanity into an unprecedented era that deviates entirely from the eras of agricultural mechanization, industrial electrification, and socialization of services. The emerging era is characterized by a globally interconnected network, immense data resources, and the utilization of artificial intelligence. During the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, General Secretary Xi Jinping unveiled an extensive blueprint for achieving comprehensive socialist modernization with distinctive Chinese characteristics by the year 2050. This blueprint has ushered in a new era of socialist modernization in China that emphasizes the co-creation and sharing of the global economic and ecological environment through digital means. It is imperative for us to diligently comprehend the essence of the 20th National Congress and closely examine Xi Jinping’s series of pivotal statements concerning the new era through a forward-thinking perspective. Recognizing that each nation possesses its own unique national conditions, developmental stages, and levels of progress, it becomes necessary to conduct comprehensive analysis and examination of the paths to modernization pursued by countries worldwide. It is crucial to adopt an open-minded approach, keeping abreast of the current times, and actively promote effective methods that emphasize mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, exchange and cooperation, as well as co-creation and sharing between China and the global community in the pursuit of green and sustainable development. By seeking mutually beneficial cooperation, we can forge a path towards green and sustainable development. 1. Peace constitutes the cornerstone and ultimate aim of green and sustainable development. It is an essential prerequisite for humanity to collaborate towards advancing prolonged economic and social growth, enhancing and reforming productivity, and safeguarding our common habitat, the ecological climate of the global community. This endeavor requires equal consideration, concerted upkeep, and joint defense. 2. The principles of green, low-carbon, and sustainable growth require a reduction in the consumption of non-renewable energy and organic resources throughout the developmental process, as well as a concerted effort to mitigate waste and greenhouse gas emissions. In order to advance the goal of universal carbon neutrality and combat global warming, it is necessary to cultivate innovative green designing and manufacturing strategies that can serve as the foundation for eco-friendly industrial processes, resource preservation, circular economic development, green constructions, zero-carbon settlements, and harmonized urban-rural integration. This requires the development of eco-friendly substances and technology, as well as the utilization of 3D printing and other low-carbon procedures. 3. Knowledge attainment necessitates extensive collective accumulation and cooperative inheritance, while talent cultivation requires collaborative industry-university-research training. Education forms the basis of sustainable economic and social development, with talent serving as a vital key foundation. Hence, society must comprehend the significance of education and revere teachers, cultivate exceptional talent, disseminate rudimentary education, enhance vocational education, encourage lifelong learning, pioneer green education, and institutionalize vocational certification processes. 4. In order to achieve sustainable development, it is imperative that we prioritize independent innovation, persist with reform measures, expand our openness, learn and assimilate advanced domestic and foreign technologies, eliminate outdated production capacity and outdated production lifestyles, update the knowledge structure of our talent pool, and cultivate and appoint exceptional young talent. 5. Innovation serves as the chief driving force behind green and sustainable development. To accomplish this, we must instill the notion that “lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets”, promote conceptual innovation, technological innovation, management innovation, institutional innovation, and cultural innovation. Through innovations, we can drive green and sustainable development, and elevate the quality of China’s modernization while simultaneously enhancing the level of co-creation and sharing. 6. Ultimately, pursuing the path of green and sustainable development requires adherence to the laws of scientific development, ensuring that we take conscious steps toward the path of scientific development. This necessitates placing importance on and strengthening investment in fundamental research such as natural sciences and mathematics, increasing considerably large-scale scientific research initiatives guided by significant scientific challenges such as the Earth and universe, matter and life, as well as enhancing the construction of major information technology research facilities. We must also generate shared platforms and open cooperative environments for interdisciplinary and international exchange research in fields such as matter, energy, life, brain, and cognitive science. These efforts will allow us to provide higher-quality public products for human civilization and to make greater contributions to human society by the Chinese nation.
